A focus on social/emotional learning - Scrambled Feelings egg and book set. Around 1 year old children can begin understanding different emotions and hearing labels for them. The caregiver builds this foundation by labeling emotions - "I see you're very happy today" or "You look sad." Giving words to these feelings can help children express how their feeling as their language builds. With these eggs you and your child can explore emotions together. Read the book about how the eggs feel and see if you're child can find the matching egg. Found in our Literacy section! We were donated a couple sets of these cards, entitled "Early Learning Fun." These cards were created by educators and child development specialists. Every month we will pull a card to share with you! What are Toy Library Kits? We created these kits with grant money from Hennepin County through their Green Partners Grant program. The project was focused on reducing waste. These kits were created to help families eliminate the need to purchase more materials for children when traveling or hosting a birthday party. We have 2 different kinds of toy library kits - trip kits and birthday kits. The trip kits are bins filled with materials appropriate for a car or plane ride. The birthday kits each have the same 4 games - parachute (and ideas for things to do with the parachute), beanbag toss, spoon and egg race game and ring toss. We hope families find them useful and help them reduce waste when hosting little kids' birthday parties. Check them out at the library! Our fine motor category includes many different items, for different ages. "Fine motor skills are the movements and coordination of the small muscles of the body, typically thought of as the movements that involve the fingers and the hands. Fine motor skills are important for supporting independence with dressing, feeding, eating and performance in school. In occupational therapy, we call the diverse array of skills our hands are capable of fine motor skills. Fine motor skills definition: the ability to efficiently utilize the complex musculature of our hands with appropriate strength, dexterity, and coordination, in order to grasp, manipulate, and accomplish functional tasks." Napacenter occupational therapist. Looking for a good New Year's resolution? Start borrowing toys! Rick has been helping the toy library repair and replace toy related items for years. We challenged him with this ask - to recreate a boulder block set. These boulders are actually measured and cut certain ways to obtain good blancing structures. He was able to make 2 different sets. We painted them and they have been a hit! Thanks Rick!
